This might seem like a strange opening sentence from a Coach,
but I think it’s an important topic to consider.
There’s a LOT of buzz around coaching. It is recognised as a
way to super charge your career, your learning and your success. That doesn’t
mean it’s a silver bullet. The coaching relationship is a co-created one, and
the coach’s role is to create the optimum conditions for you to explore your
thinking out loud in order to find your best way forward. A coach is not there
to tell you what to do.
If you are considering working with a coach here are some
important questions to consider:
Are you ready to take ownership and responsibility for your
growth and development?
This means being open to exploring your patterns of thinking
and behaviour so you can identify what is within your control and where you
have room to make changes.
Are you ready to take action, or are you looking for a space
to moan and wallow?
This is about being really honest with yourself about your
current situation. Are you truly motivated to make changes and are you willing
to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with trying new ways of
being and doing?
Are you ready to invest in creating change?
This asks us to think about what needs to be different and
why. But there’s more to it than that. We also need to recognise that any
change requires an investment, be that time, energy, or even money. If we are
not willing to resource the change then it’s highly unlikely to happen.
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to investing in coaching is that
people generally want guarantees of results. Here are some further questions to
help work out how ready you are to put the work in to cementing those
assurances:
Are you open to learning about yourself?
Are you curious about how much you can actually achieve if you are focused and
supported and do you feel ready to be held accountable for your progress?
Are you willing to explore and sit with the tough stuff, especially when it
feels challenging and difficult?
It's completely natural to experience doubts, but these questions will help you
to prepare for getting the most out of your coaching experience if you decide
it’s something you’d like to explore.
A wonderful client I had the pleasure of working
with last year wrote this article describing the initial doubts and fears she
experienced, the journey we took together and the results she achieved by
tapping into the transformational power of her own internal insight and wisdom
through the process of coaching. If it’s something you feel ready to explore
further, why not book in a call!
